It is hard to describe how many facets there are to caring for a newborn. This can all be overwhelming for new parents, especially if things did not go well with the delivery. This was what happened to us - many unforeseen complications pre-, during, and after delivery, which added significant stress to the first days of our life as a family.
Luckily, we received the help of not one, but two (one in training) friendly and knowledgeable maternity nurses from the first day of returning from the hospital. Not only did they provide us with an incredible amount of information on how to care for our baby - guiding us in practice, but also helped the recovering mother (me) keep fed and hydrated (the breakfast bowls were a lifesaver) and supported in household chores to maintain order and keeping things tidy.
In addition, as I had many complications during and after delivery, the maternity nurses provided me with much needed emotional support, which was a great first aid in processing these issues and get started on my mental recovery. It was also reassuring to hear that the emotional roller coaster of the first days and weeks is completely natural and normal, as the overwhelming force of these feelings came as a bit of a surprise to me.
Thanks again, Nina and Nathaly, you made a real difference!
